San Antonio Rampage hockey players recognize HCK 4th grader

On Thursday, January 12, a couple of San Antonio Rampage hockey players, (#1) Goalie Dov Grumet-Morris and (#8) Center Tim Kennedy showed up to the Higgs, Carter, King gym at 702 to preach to the middle schoolers the advantage of never giving up on your dreams. The appearance was in honor of 4th grader Joshua Ramos of Mrs. Bonillas' class who wrote one of the best responses to a Martin Luther King, Jr. 'I have a dream' contest sponsored by Spurs Sports and Entertainment, Inc. Joshua's response centered around a non-violent world where people could live in harmony, and was echoed by both of the hockey players.
After speaking for a few minutes to the middle schoolers, Grumet-Morris and Kennedy both participated in an activity inside Mrs. Bonillas' classroom where the class matched up descriptions of famous historical people to their picture. All-in-all it was a great time shared by everyone, and we are so proud of Joshua for winning this opportunity, but most of all, we hope that Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream along with Joshua's is realized and attained in society for the betterment of the world.
Local tv station KENS5 was on hand as well taping a segment which will air Saturday morning Jan. 14 between 7:30-9am on their morning news program.

HCK Special Recognition!!! Time to RECOGNIZE!!
HCK student Marcus Rivers was just awarded with a scholarship to St. Mary's University in San Antonio. We are all very proud of him, and in response to this great accomplishment, his mother wanted to make a special recognition to HCK teacher Roberto Alfaro for his tireless effort in transforming Marcus into the man he has become. It is things like this, a teacher not giving up on a student, that makes our HCK community so proud to do what we do day in and day out. We praise Marcus for attaining this scholarship and wish him the best as he enters into his college life. We expect great things out of Mr. Rivers in the future, but Mr. Alfaro will continue to set strong examples this year and next on the campus of HCK and we are excited to see who will be next in line to get college scholarships from HCK!!!
HCK student wins Martin Luther King, Jr. "I have a Dream" writing contest sponsered by Spurs Sports and Entertainment, Inc.

BREAKFAST BUCKS FOR BOOKS HAS STARTED!
We had soooo much fun last year at Half Price Book Stores and we are ready to do it again this year. Remember, being at school everyday and eating breakfast everyday is the key towards earning bucks to spend on books! Yea! Keep up the great work!

And we are still competing for that national #1 spot with Action 100, so we need all of our students to continue excelling at reading all their books everyday! We can do it!!!

Welcome to the website of the #1 school in the U.S.A. in the American Reading Company's Action 100 Reading Program!!! We have the best READERS in the country!!! Congratulations to all of our students for this prestigious honor and we hope we can maintain this level of reading throughout the entire year! We Can Do It!!!!!

Our Pre-Kinder students are excelling each and every day!! In Ms. Tammy Villanueva's class, the kids love to write their letters and numbers, and are exceeding their teachers expectations to one day be the smartest students they can be. At Higgs, Carter, King we strive to mold our students to be the best that they can be!!! We Can Do It!!!

Each day our teachers train, prepare, plan and organize for 90 minutes to add rigor to every lesson so that all students can reach their full potential! This is the first year we have been able to schedule time for daily collaborative planning time for all of our kinder through 12th grade teachers. Listen to what they have to say after three weeks of school. "The past three (3) weeks have gone well!" "I am doing well! It's very hard work and time consuming work! My students are interested in learning!" "Each day gets a bit easier - the routine seems to be falling in to place. The children are eager to learn and there is a lot of work to do, but I feel pretty good about it!" "Parents have been very supportive!" "Parents are great!" "Kids are turning in homework!" "Kids know procedures!" "Binders are working great!" "I have learned so much over the last three (3) weeks...so much!" "Teaching my lessons has improved greatly!" "I like my progress in classroom management!" "It's a pursuit of happiness!" "I feel we have had a great start to the year... The challenge is getting the students back into the school mode." "I anticipate great things from my students this year!" "My parents are awesome this year very supportive! My students are open for learning and full of energy! They keep me on my toes! My time so far is wonderfully over-whelming and full of fun!" "We're working, working, and working!" We are expecting great learning to take place everyday in every classroom so that our students can perform their best and be ready for the SAT tests and for college! Hip, hip, hooray!
